Get a $100 Walmart Gift Card!
- Don't want a $100 gift card from Walmart or Target? Although it sounds good, if you see an offer in your mailbox, you probably shouldn't respond. John Pratt got one "I thought it would be nice if you could offer a $100 card. My curiosity led me to call them," he says. For a $100 purchase, at Target or Walmart, he said, he had to at least try. He called the mailing number — it was just a matter of seconds and the red flag went up." They said, 'We need a credit card,' and I thought it was a scam from them," he explained. Pratt's instinct was right. We called Walmart and Target and both confirmed the offer was not from them. Walmart sent a statement that said in part, "It is unfortunate that some people use the good name of a reputable business for their own personal gain." Postal Inspector Michael Romano said other things stood out immediately; There is no return address, no website, and no real way to contact the sender beyond a phone number and what is supposed to be a claim number. He says there's a good reason why you don't want to call the number: Scammers are waiting. said. Inspector Romano said these offers are usually tied to mystery shopping scams and will try to trick you into thinking retailers are doing research and need your help. "They're going to entice you in one way or another to send additional money, and usually it's by way of money order or wire transfer," Romano explains. For that phone number on offer, Romano called and so did we, the line was disconnected. He says it's normal. Scammers set up shop and quickly disconnect the number, trying to trick as many people as possible, and sadly, some people will be fooled. "I'm sure there are some who will but there are others like me who will complain to your station about this," Pratt said. If you think there is some truth to this, don't be so quick to react, call Walmart or Target to get some answers. Another reason not to call the number on offer, postal inspectors say, is that crooks will sometimes collect and sell your information.
